Can I borrow textbooks from the library?

The library can provide access to some textbooks, but we are not able to serve all the textbook needs of CBC students.

Answer

Sometimes students think the library sells textbooks; that is done by the CBC Bookstore. The library has some textbooks on reserve for use in the building. We also scan chapters and put them on electronic reserve upon faculty request (usually the first reading assignment); see our catalog for the reserve list. If you don't see your textbook, please let your instructor know - or contact the library so we can reach out to them on your behalf.

If you are temporarily unable to afford your books (waiting for financial aid, for instance) you might be able to secure a textbook loan https://www.columbiabasin.edu/i-am/current-hawk/student-resources/money-for-you/index.html – they are interest free. That same link provides access to other funding options, or you can contact familyservices@columbiabasin.edu or call 542-4412. You should also ask your instructors whether there are cheaper options; many books may be rented, and sometimes a used copy of a previous edition can be a workable solution. Still, it is essential that you discuss this problem with your instructor as soon as you can - you don't want to get the wrong thing or fall behind. Please know that this is one of the most common problems students face, so do not hesitate to ask for help.

The library does facilitate the Book Assistance Program for running start students who have a need-based waiver; those students receive free use of their textbooks for the quarter. Some quarters there are books leftover, and we are allowed to lend them to other students beginning the third week of the quarter on a first come, first served basis.
