Can I borrow a laptop?

Answer

Laptop Borrowing

No internet at home? See our FAQ for additional internet access options.

The CBC Library has nearly 300 laptops which we loan throughout each academic quarter.
It's not unusual for us to run out of laptops, so come into the Library early in the quarter to increase your chances of borrowing one!

Loaning Rules

  • Laptops loan for 30 days
    • Upon returning your laptop, you may immediately borrow a new laptop if we have one available.
    • Failure to promptly return a laptop may result in no longer being able to borrow laptops.
  • Late laptops are subject to a $25/week late fine
  • You must be enrolled in the current quarter
    • Check with the Library's front desk if you are in need of a laptop between quarters.
  • Laptops are available to ALL currently enrolled CBC students!
    • This includes students in Transitional Studies, certificate programs, and special academic programs.
  • Library laptops are not available to CBC employees or non-enrolled community members

How to Borrow a Laptop

Laptops may be borrowed by visiting the Library's Front Desk in Pasco. Laptops cannot be placed on hold or reserved in advance.

When you arrive at the Library you will:

  • Complete a Technology Agreement form
    • This is required once per quarter
    • Enrollment is verified at the time the Loan Agreement is signed each quarter.

  • Need a form of photo i.d.
    • CBC id card, drivers license, high school id, Costco card... we don't care! It just needs to have your photo and name on it.

How to Return a Laptop

Returns can be made at the Library's Front Desk during our open hours.

Process:

  • You will be asked to remove these parts and show them to the staff:
    • Laptops
      • Laptop
      • Carrying case and strap
      • Mouse
      • Charger
      • Headset (only with WorkFirst loans)

Additional Borrowing Rules

  • All equipment is due back to the Library at the end of a one month loan period OR by the end of the current quarter, whichever is soonest.
    • For example, if the end of the current quarter is June 14th and you borrow a laptop on June 1st, your laptop will be due on June 14th.
  • Upon returning your laptop, you may immediately borrow a new laptop if we have one available.

Using the laptop

  • You should never store files on the computer as they will be lost on shut down or reboot. We loan flash drives!
  • You should always check the condition of the laptop before leaving with it and bring any issues to the attention of Library staff. Any damage noted upon return may be charged to your account.

Damage and Replacement Fees

  • After 14 days of non-return, devices are considered lost and the borrower is responsible for paying the full replacement cost (up to $1,200 for laptops, plus a processing fee)
    • If a borrower does not return a device, it will be treated as theft and reported to Campus Security. Replacement fees may result in a block on the student's college account and may render a student unable to register for further classes.
  • Damages will be assessed on an individual basis and charged in the same manner as an unreturned device.
  • Laptops are loaned with additional components. Failure to return these items will result in a $20 replacement charge for each item to replace:
    • Charger
      • Carrying case
      • Bag strap
      • External mouse
